Pieces move along lines on the board. They may move a single step, or they may leap over a single piece to capture it. A piece that just captured may make another capturing move. Captures are compulsory. The object is to capture all of the opponent's men. Alquerque, an Arab game, was the forerunner of checkers. It dates back at least to the 10th century, though a board showing this pattern was found in an Egyptian temple dated before 1300 B.C. The game spread to Spain, where it appeared in the 13th Century "Book of Games" compiled under the direction of King Alfonso X of Castile. This variation is simply standard Alquerque using a double board like the one used for Fanorona. |
